Vallensbæk

Serie 1 is the fifth tier of Danish football, and at that level the opposition tends to come from the next town along rather than from the other side of the country. For Vallensbæk IF that means a season spent among clubs from the western fringe of Copenhagen, where the fixtures that matter are settled by proximity as much as by any older grievance. The exception is the DBU Pokalen, which the club enters regularly: it is the one competition where the draw can put an amateur side in front of opponents it would otherwise never meet, and where a team from Serie 1 might fancy their chances for ninety minutes.

Home matches are played at Vallensbæk Idrætscenter, which holds 2000 and takes its name, like the club, from the town itself. Vallensbæk Strand sits on the coast south-west of the Danish capital, close enough that the club draws from a commuter belt rather than from a self-contained football town.

The players go out in yellow shirts and black shorts, the two colours the club has registered as its own.

Nothing in the record shows a trophy or a final, which is the ordinary condition of a club at this level: the season is measured in league position and in how far the cup run goes before it stops. What the club does carry is its own founding date, worn openly in the shorthand supporters and opponents use for it — VI39, from Vallensbæk idrætsforening af 1939, the year an amateur association in a small coastal parish south of Copenhagen put a football team on its books.
