«Hoyas»
Al Blozis put the shot before he put on pads at Georgetown, and both events ended the same way: winning. The tackle was an All-Pro with the New York Giants and a national shot put champion before he was killed in action during the Second World War, and the Giants retired his number 32.
The program traces back to 1874, though its first game waited until 1881. Georgetown reached the Orange Bowl in 1941 and the Sun Bowl in 1950, losing both. Financial losses shut the team down in 1951, and it took until 1964 to bring football back, first as a club sport, then at varsity level in Division III from 1970. The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship of 1997, retained jointly the following year, marked the modern high point.
Cooper Field, opened in 2021 and holding 4,418, is the third home ground the Hoyas have known, after Griffith Stadium and Harbin Field. The name Hoyas comes from the university chant "Hoya Saxa," and Jack the Bulldog carries it onto the field.
