PSS Sleman

In 2018, a 42-year-old striker led PSS Sleman's line in Liga 2 and finished the season as its top scorer. Cristian Gonzales scored his way through that campaign and put the club back into Indonesia's top flight, a place it had not occupied since winning the old First Division in 2013.

The team from Sleman, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, plays in green and white, colours that also carry the nickname Super Elang Jawa, the Super Java Eagles. Their home is Maguwoharjo Stadium, a ground they share with PSIM Yogyakarta: matches against PSIM Yogyakarta are known as the Derby DIY, a fixture that draws on the old rivalry between the two towns of the special region.

Before the 2018 title, the club's honours board was thinner than the eagle nickname suggested — a First Division win in 2013, a runners-up finish in 2000, third place in the 2021 Menpora Cup. Kim Kurniawan, a naturalised midfielder, wore the captain's armband through much of that stretch, while Hokky Caraka came up through the club's own academy rather than arriving from outside.

PSS Sleman finished as runners-up in the Liga 2 Championship for the 2025–26 season, a result that leaves the club still working from the second tier rather than the one Gonzales had carried them into in 2018. The eagle has not yet found its way back to the top flight.
