About

The Indonesian top-flight professional football league operates under the current name the BRI Super League, having previously been known as Liga 1 and the Indonesia Super League. Administered by PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB), the competition serves as the Level 1 tier of the national football pyramid, replacing the former Liga Indonesia Premier Division. The structure features 18 clubs competing in a double round-robin format that results in 34 matchdays per season.

A defining characteristic of the format is the absence of play-offs for the championship title. Instead, the team accumulating the most points at the end of the campaign is crowned champion. The competitive stakes are clear regarding movement between tiers: the bottom three teams face relegation to the second tier, known as the Championship, while the top teams from that division earn promotion. This professional structure was established in 2008 to separate the modern game from the amateur Perserikatan era, which concluded in 1994.

International qualification follows specific slots based on the country’s ranking within the Asian confederation. The winner of the domestic title qualifies for the AFC Champions League Two, distinguishing it from the elite tier reserved for higher-ranked nations. Similarly, the runner-up typically secures a place in either the AFC Champions League Two or the AFC Challenge League, depending on slot allocations. These pathways differ significantly from the Piala Indonesia, which functions as a knockout cup involving all tiers rather than a league table competition.

Historical dominance in the professional era highlights the competitive balance. Persija Jakarta holds the record as the most successful club with 11 national titles, followed closely by Persib Bandung with 10. Persib Bandung remains the current champion for the 2025–26 season. The league has undergone several rebrandings since its inception, shifting from the Indonesia Super League to Liga 1, and finally to the current Super League sponsored by Bank Rakyat Indonesia.
