About

The Piala Presiden operates as an annual pre-season tournament in Indonesia, distinct from the official domestic pyramid. It was created in 2015 to maintain football activity after the Football Association of Indonesia faced suspension by FIFA. Mahaka Sports and Entertainment initially organized the event, which served as a substitute for the Indonesia Super League during the sanctions period.

Following the lifting of restrictions in 2017, the national federation took over the organization and rights to the name. The competition remains an invitational pre-season event used for team preparation and fitness before the start of the Liga 1 season. It does not determine promotion or relegation, nor does it offer qualification for continental competitions. This separates it from the official domestic knockout cup, which is open to clubs from all tiers and allows the winner to enter Asian competitions.

The Piala Presiden typically features a smaller field of invited clubs, primarily from Liga 1, and occasionally includes international guest teams or an Indonesia All-Stars squad. The format has varied over the years, generally consisting of a group stage followed by knockout rounds. For the 2025 edition, the structure included two groups of three teams, with group winners advancing directly to the final and runners-up playing for third place.

Arema FC stands as the most successful club in the tournament's history with four titles. Persebaya Surabaya claimed the 2026 edition, continuing the tradition of top-tier participation. Port FC from Thailand won the 2025 edition, marking the first time foreign clubs participated in the competition. The 2026 tournament was split into an 'Elite' version for top-tier clubs and a 'Liga 4' version for lower-division teams, with the latter not counting toward the main title. The inaugural 2015 tournament was won by Persib Bandung, while the 2019 final was played as a two-legged tie. The tournament was not held in 2016 and was suspended from 2020 to 2021 due to the pandemic.
