Duquesne was on the schedule in 1995. Until 1994 the university's teams were the Redmen. That year the name was changed to Red Storm over concerns about Native American imagery. The football side won a conference title in the same season, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship of 1994.

Those seven came in three different leagues. The Metropolitan Intercollegiate Conference gave it four in a row from 1981 to 1984. The Liberty Conference added two, in 1989 and 1991. By the mid-1990s the team was competing at Division I-AA, now called the Football Championship Subdivision, from Queens in New York City.

The setting was modest. DaSilva Memorial Field, originally St. John's Stadium, held about 1,200 people. For some games the team left campus for Yankee Stadium.

The programme ended after the 2002 season, having begun in 1884. The Red Storm name outlived it, and it is still used by the university's other varsity teams.
