Ellis Park Stadium

The outline of the roof is unmistakable. Inside, the seats are red and grey.

It has lived through a few different lives. The original structure was pulled down in 1979 and raised again between 1979 and 1982, so the bones of the thing are older than they look.

The ground is known for the way it changes. It hosted the 1995 Rugby World Cup final when Nelson Mandela presented the trophy, and it holds a darker memory from 2001, when a crowd crush took forty-three lives during a match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

Primary tenants include the Super Rugby side the Lions and the national rugby team, the Springboks. The address is on N. Park Lane in the Doornfontein suburb. The building has had several names over the years, from Coca-Cola Park to Emirates Airline Park, but the locals still call it Ellis Park.
