McCarthy Stadium
Wilkes-Barre, United States
The stadium does not sit on the main campus of King’s College but in Wilkes-Barre Township. It is a ground built for football. McCarthy Stadium has always been known by the same name.
The facility hosts the annual Mayor’s Cup rivalry between King’s College and Wilkes University.
Attention turns instead to the history of the place and the people who gave it its name. John D. McCarthy and his wife Cecilia were long-time supporters of the college, and their contribution ensured their son and daughter would never forget the institution.
There is another McCarthy Stadium in Philadelphia, home to La Salle University, but that is a different place entirely. The Wilkes-Barre ground is smaller and built for a different kind of game. The surface is not something written in stone, but it holds the games played on it.
