«Monarchs»
King's College opened its doors in Wilkes-Barre in 1946, and the football team took the field under that same banner. For most of that stretch the Monarchs measured themselves against Wilkes University's Colonels, the two sides meeting every year in the Mayor's Cup.
The 2024 side carried that form into the NCAA Division III playoffs and lost 33-30 to Salisbury in the first round, a repeat of the postseason appearance the program had managed once before, back in 2002.
Damon Saxon's name from that earlier era still carries weight at King's; he went in as a Melberger Award finalist in 2000 and was inducted into the Middle Atlantic Conference Hall of Fame in 2024.
None of it has ever needed a large stage. McCarthy Stadium holds about 3,000.
