Milan Puskar Stadium
Morgantown, United States
Formerly: Mountaineer Field
Milan Puskar Stadium sits on the Evansdale Campus of West Virginia University, positioned between the Law School and Medical School buildings. Having served as the home for the West Virginia University Mountaineers since it opened in September 1980, the stadium carried the name Mountaineer Field for over two decades before being renamed in 2004 following a donation from Milan Puskar, a Morgantown resident and founder of Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
The distinctive 'crown'—a raised center section used for water drainage on natural grass fields—was removed to make way for modern drainage systems and the installation of artificial turf. This surface, currently FieldTurf Revolution 2.5, replaced the original natural grass that hosted the opening ceremony in 1980. That event featured John Denver landing on the field in a helicopter to perform 'Take Me Home, Country Roads,' a song that has been played at every Mountaineers home game since 1972.
Capacity has fluctuated over the years, settling at 60,000 after luxury suites were added in 2004. The attendance record remains 70,222, a crowd that gathered on November 20, 1993, to watch #9 ranked West Virginia defeat #4 ranked Miami 17–14. The venue has hosted state high-school football championships and regional Drum Corps International events.
In October 2023, Don Nehlen, the university’s all-time winningest football coach, was honoured with his name displayed on the terrace alongside retired numbers of Major Harris, Ira Rodgers, Sam Huff, Bruce Bosley, and Darryl Talley. The stadium has also seen concerts by major artists like Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney, and during the 2020 season opener, it held its first game without fans due to safety precautions.
