Walnut Street Stadium
Muncie, United States
Formerly: Walnut Street Park, North Walnut Street Ball Park, North Walnut Athletic Park
The ground is not defined by its capacity or its address, but by the shape of its stands and what they witnessed. A single row of stands stretches across the site.
The stadium sat in the town centre, near where the current high school fieldhouse stands today. It was the home of the Muncie Flyers during the very first seasons of the American Professional Football Association, which later became the NFL. The team played here in 1920 and 1921. By 1927, the venue was also used by the Ball Teachers Hoosieroons, the team that would eventually become the Ball State Cardinals.
The ground itself was natural grass, worn down by the seasons.
The structure was eventually replaced by Ball State Field, then later by Scheumann Stadium, but this building remains as a piece of the town's early sporting history. The Flyers lost to the Cincinnati Celts here in 1921, a match that is still recorded in the archives.
