«Flyers»
Muncie Flyers carried a title into Indiana before the club ever wore that name: as the Congerville Flyers, they took the Indiana State Championship in 1913. That championship travelled with the club when it relocated to Muncie in 1920 and signed on as one of the fourteen charter members of the American Professional Football Association, the body that became the NFL.
The league record that followed did not match the earlier one. Muncie lost all three games they played in the top flight, opening with a 45–0 defeat to the Rock Island Independents and following it with losses to the Evansville Crimson Giants and the Cincinnati Celts. High running costs and thin crowds at Walnut Street Field, which held around 3,000, pushed the club out of the league after the 1921 season.
Cooney Checkaye held the club together through that stretch, working as player, coach and owner at once, alongside early owner Earl Ball. Leaving the league did not end the team: it kept playing as an independent side and, in 1925, shifted a few miles to become the Jonesboro Flyers, closing out a 6–2–3 season before disbanding for good.
None of that dimmed the local fixtures that mattered most in Muncie itself. The Flyers' sharpest contests were against the Muncie Avondale Athletic Club and the Muncie Offers More Athletic Club, games fought over the Muncie City Championship, with the Gas City Tigers a regular opponent besides.
