The FIBA U16 Women's AfroBasket stands as the premier continental tournament for under-16 national teams across Africa. Historical dominance has long characterised the tournament. Mali secured eight consecutive titles spanning from the inaugural edition in 2009 through to 2023. This sequence ended in 2025 when Egypt claimed victory, defeating Côte d'Ivoire in a final staged in Kigali, Rwanda. The 2025 edition also marked an official rebranding from the former name to align with broader continental strategies.

Participation numbers typically fluctuate between six and eight nations. Recent line-ups have included teams from Angola, Egypt, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, and Rwanda. The format prioritises player progression rather than the immediate pursuit of senior continental honours.
