Liga Nacional de Básquetbol stands as the premier professional basketball competition in Paraguay. Operating at Level 1 of the national pyramid, the league is governed by the Confederación Paraguaya de Básquetbol (CPB), an organization established in 1944 under its original name, the Federación Paraguaya de Básquetbol. The CPB underwent a name change in 1974 to reflect its expanded scope. Founded in 1937, the LNB staged its first season that same year, which was secured by Olimpia, now known as Olimpia Kings. The competition utilises a distinctive format not often seen in the region. The campaign is split into two halves: the Apertura and the Clausura. Each stage determines its own winner, and these two champions typically meet to decide the absolute titleholder, the Campeón Absoluto. Following the regular season, the top four teams progress to the "Top 4" playoff stage, known as the Cuadrangular. These knockout rounds, including the semifinals and finals, are played out over best-of-5 series. Participation in the LNB is closed, meaning there is no direct promotion or relegation pathway to a second division. Teams enter the league through qualification criteria that involve a split between the Metropolitan Basketball League, covering clubs in Asunción, and the National League. This structure ensures stability for the participating franchises. Historical dominance in the competition belongs to Olimpia Kings, who hold the record with 36 titles. Deportivo San José follows with 19 championships and demonstrated significant strength in recent years by winning the absolute championship consecutively from 2021 through 2024. Sol de América and Libertad also feature among the most successful clubs, with 11 and 9 titles respectively. The current roster includes Ciudad Nueva, Colonias Gold, Deportivo San José, and others competing for the national crown.
