About

The Liga Nacional de Baloncesto Profesional stands as the premier professional basketball division in Mexico. Established in 2000, the competition emerged when clubs withdrew from the previous circuit, CIMEBA, citing financial instability. While the two leagues coexisted for several years, the LNBP eventually replaced its rival as the top tier after CIMEBA folded in 2007.

Unlike many international structures, the LNBP operates as a closed franchise system. There is no promotion or relegation, and new participants are admitted through strict applications regarding financial stability and infrastructure. The current season features a regular schedule followed by a Play-In tournament for mid-table teams, before the standard conference playoffs conclude with a best-of-seven championship series.

Fuerza Regia de Monterrey holds the record for the most titles, having won six championships according to available records. The club also secured the most recent title in the 2024–2025 season. The league has previously attracted international attention, with notable NBA players such as Dennis Rodman and Jamario Moon appearing for Fuerza Regia during its history.

The LNBP distinguishes itself from Mexico’s other major league, CIBACOPA, which is regarded as the second tier. The structural differences are significant. CIBACOPA runs primarily in Northwestern Mexico with a shorter season, whereas the LNBP allows up to six imports per roster and permits unlimited Mexican-American dual citizens. CIBACOPA restricts dual citizens to one per team. Financially, the LNBP offers higher average salaries compared to its counterpart. The LNBP has also maintained a history of participation in the FIBA Americas League, now known as Liga de las Américas.
