About

The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada) was a winter professional basketball competition that operated in Canada. Founded in 2011, the league ran its season from November to April, distinct from the summer-based Canadian Elite Basketball League. It functioned as a closed franchise system without promotion or relegation, featuring divisions and a playoff tournament structure.

The league began with seven teams, combining three franchises from the Premier Basketball League with four new entrants. Over its existence, it attracted international players, offering a career path for athletes seeking opportunities outside the primary North American developmental systems. The London Lightning emerged as the dominant force, securing six championships during the league's history. Their success included titles in 2012, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2022, and 2023.

The competition faced significant turbulence early on. A notable incident occurred in 2015 when the Halifax Rainmen forfeited a crucial game to the Windsor Express following a pre-game altercation, an event that contributed to the Rainmen's eventual bankruptcy. Despite such controversies, the league continued to operate, drawing substantial crowds at times, with the London Lightning recording an attendance of 8,500 fans in a single match.

The NBL Canada ceased operations in 2023 after the 2022–23 season. Its remaining franchises, including the KW Titans, London Lightning, Sudbury Five, and Windsor Express, transferred to the Basketball Super League. The league never maintained a formal affiliation with the NBA G League, positioning itself as an independent entity for professional basketball players.
