U SPORTS (Canada) 2024/25

U SPORTS basketball is the national championship structure for university men’s basketball in Canada. It operates at the highest level of post-secondary sport in the country, standing apart from the community college system governed by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. The competition involves approximately 40 to 48 teams split into four regional conferences: Canada West, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, and Atlantic University Sport. Clubs such as Acadia, Alberta, and Brandon compete within this framework, where the regular season runs from October through February. The path to glory culminates in the Final 8, a single-elimination tournament featuring the top eight teams from the regular season. This national championship has been contested since 1963, when Assumption College claimed the first title. That institution is now known as the University of Windsor. Over the decades, the Carleton Ravens have accumulated the most titles in the competition’s history, winning 18 championships. The current holder of the trophy is the University of Victoria Vikes, who secured the 2025 title. Unlike the American NCAA system, U SPORTS prioritizes academic standards and limits athletic scholarships to tuition and fees rather than full rides. There is no promotion or relegation; membership depends entirely on institutional affiliation. The age cap for athletes sits at 24, and the organisation allows Name, Image, and Likeness deals more extensively than its North American counterparts historically permitted.
