«Rouge et Or»
Ask about the Rouge et Or and the conversation runs first to Concordia and to McGill. The men's side of that history is shorter and blunter: a program that had gone without a national title finally got one in 2024, beating Queen's University 77-71, with Ismael Diouf taking the tournament's most valuable player award.
The women's program is the older and deeper one, present at the U Sports tournament as far back as 1976. It has never won that national final — losses to McGill in 2017 and to McMaster in 2019 mark the closest it has come, with a bronze medal in 2020 — but at the provincial level, in the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, it has dominated the standings, taking the regular-season title in nine straight years between 2000 and 2010 and the conference tournament almost as often. Sarah-Jane Marois was named the league's Player of the Year in 2019, in the middle of that run.
Games are played at the Amphithéâtre-gymnase Desjardins, inside the university's PEPS complex, where 1,884 fixed seats can be pushed to just over 3,000 for the bigger nights. The colours are red and gold, and the name Rouge et Or was given to Université Laval's teams in 1950, a year before the men's basketball side itself came into being.
