About

The FIBA European Championship for Small Countries operates as the lowest-ranked tier within the FIBA EuroBasket competition structure. It is a biennial senior men's national basketball tournament organized by FIBA Europe for national teams with populations under three million or those ranked lowest by the governing body. The event was founded in 1988 and has carried several names, including the Promotion Cup and EuroBasket Division C, before adopting its current title in 2011 following the abolition of the divisional system for the main EuroBasket. The tournament is distinct from the Games of the Small States of Europe, which is a multi-sport event organized by National Olympic Committees, whereas this championship is a basketball-specific continental tournament organized by FIBA. The format generally consists of a single round-robin group stage followed by knockout semi-finals and finals for the top and bottom halves of the table. Historically, the number of participants varied between four and nine teams, though recent editions typically featured four to six teams. Promotion rules have evolved over time; since 2011, there is no automatic promotion to the main EuroBasket tournament. Instead, winners and high-performing teams enter the EuroBasket Pre-Qualifiers. Andorra stands as the most successful nation with six titles, while the most recent confirmed champion is Andorra, who defeated Malta 84–79 in 2024. The 2026 edition is scheduled to be hosted by Gibraltar. The competition currently features teams from Andorra, Gibraltar, Malta, and San Marino. There is no relegation from this tournament as it remains the bottom tier of the senior structure.
