About
The FIBA Europe Cup stands as the fourth tier in the hierarchy of European professional club basketball. Established by FIBA Europe in June 2015, the tournament replaced the FIBA EuroChallenge to provide a pathway for clubs that do not compete in the upper echelons of the sport. It operates independently of the EuroLeague and the EuroCup, which are governed by Euroleague Basketball, as well as the Basketball Champions League. The structure involves a Regular Season featuring 40 teams split into 10 groups of four. These teams play a home-and-away round-robin format before advancing to a Second Round comprising four additional groups. The competition culminates in a two-legged knockout phase consisting of quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final.
Participation is determined by domestic performance and FIBA rankings rather than promotion or relegation from national leagues. Clubs often qualify after being eliminated from higher-tier qualifiers or through their standing in smaller domestic leagues. This format distinguishes the event from its counterparts, which generally feature clubs from larger markets. The financial stakes are comparatively lower, with an emphasis on developing talent and providing competitive opportunities for growing basketball nations. The 2019–20 season was voided due to the pandemic, disrupting the continuity of the tournament. Surne Bilbao Basket holds the record for the most titles, having secured the championship twice. Anwil Włocławek also claimed the trophy in the 2022–23 campaign. The competition continues to serve as a vital component of the European basketball calendar, offering a distinct stage for clubs outside the mainstream spotlight.
