Basketball in Tartu started with a man who had studied the game where it was invented: Herbert Niiler brought back what he had learned at Springfield College and, in 1937, established a club under the name Tartu Eesti Akadeemiline Spordiklubi. The club underwent various transformations: Soviet reorganisation turned it into Tartu ÜSK, then into TRÜ once it belonged to the Tartu State University, and the 1990s ran through a string of sponsors' names before the club settled, in 1999, into a merger with Delta. Between 2001 and 2016 Estonians knew it simply as Rock, after brewery money attached to the university's name, and since 2020 it has carried a longer sponsored title still built on the same university core.

None of the renaming touched what the team did on the floor. Under one name or another, the club has taken the Estonian championship more times than any other, a run that stretches from 1938 to a title won as recently as this year. A run to the semi-finals of the FIBA EuroCup in 2008 remains the club's deepest mark in European competition, and this past season it reached second place in the joint Latvian-Estonian league, the furthest it has gone in that format.

The fixture that still empties the diary in Tartu is against BC Kalev/Cramo of Tallinn, a capital-versus-university-town meeting Estonian media simply calls the derby, without needing to dress it up further.

Janar Talts is the name attached to one of the club's clearest championship memories, named Finals MVP when the title came home in 2010 — one line in a history that has produced more than one such player, but his is the one people in Tartu still bring up first.
