Every time TalTech takes the floor against Tartu Ülikool Maks & Moorits, Estonian basketball calls it the University Derby, and the label fits.

The club grew out of the sports section at Tallinn Polytechnic Institute, which entered the Estonian Championship in 1951, though students at the institute's predecessor, Tallinn Tehnikum, had already been playing the game since 1928. The name changed twice as the university itself was renamed — TPI gave way to TTÜ in 1989, and TTÜ became TalTech in 2018 — and for one season in 2010 the team merged with Tallinna Kalev before splitting apart again.

Its strongest run came early: six straight Estonian Championships between 1961 and 1966, followed by two more in 1984 and 1985. The eight Estonian Cups, spread from 1960 to 2003, tell a similar story of a club that mattered most in its first decades. Tiit Sokk, who went on to take Olympic gold in 1988, and Priit Tomson, an Olympic bronze medallist in 1968, both came through the programme.

Financial trouble has interrupted the club twice — it dropped out of the top flight after the 1993–94 season and again in 2005, returning only in 2006–07. Since then the honours have come from a different competition altogether: three titles in the International Students Basketball League, in 2013, 2016 and 2017, rather than from the domestic league where it once dominated. Under Alar Varrak, in charge since 2021, and playing in the Estonian-Latvian league since 2022–23, TalTech has yet to add a ninth national championship to match its record from six decades ago.
