About

The tournament stands as the premier men's basketball championship in Europe, organized by FIBA Europe. The competition was founded in 1935, with the inaugural event taking place in Switzerland. It occupies the highest position in the European national team hierarchy. Currently, the championship involves 24 national teams. The structure begins with a group stage featuring four groups of six teams, played in a round-robin format. The top four teams from each group, totaling 16, progress to a single-elimination knockout stage. This phase includes the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final, alongside a Third-Place Game. Qualification relies on open tournaments involving all FIBA Europe member federations. A previous divisional system with promotion and relegation was abolished in 2011, leaving no formal link to lower-tier competitions. The Soviet Union holds the record for success with 14 titles. Other nations with multiple victories include Yugoslavia with eight, Spain with four, and Lithuania, Greece, Germany, and Italy with two each. Germany remains the current holder after defeating Turkey in the 2025 final. Historically, the 1987 final saw Greece overcome the Soviet Union 103–101 in overtime, a result credited with launching Greek basketball. The record for most points in a single game belongs to Belgium's Eddy Terrace, who scored 63 points in 1957. The event is distinct from the EuroLeague, which operates as a club competition governed by Euroleague Basketball.
