The Lithuanian Women's Basketball League, officially known as the Moterų Lietuvos krepšinio lyga (LMKL), is the top-tier professional competition for women's basketball in the country. Unlike the men's top flight, which operates under a separate professional association, the LMKL remains under the direct control of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF). This structure has remained consistent since the league's formal establishment in 2002, following a period of competitive play that resumed in the 1989–1990 season.
The current A Division features six teams, including Aistes LSU Kaunas Women, Alytaus Dzukija Women, and Kibirkštis MRU Vilnius Women. The season follows a regular season and playoffs format. During the regular season, each team plays every other side three times. All participants advance to the knockout stages. The top two teams progress directly to the semifinals, while those ranked third through sixth contest quarterfinals in a best-of-2 series. The semifinals follow the same format, leading to a best-of-3 final.
Vilniaus Kibirkštis holds the record for success, having claimed the title 26 times. They are also the reigning champions for the 2024–2025 season. The league winner earns a place in the EuroLeague Women and the Baltic Women's Basketball League. It is important to distinguish this domestic championship from the latter, which includes clubs from Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Lithuanian teams often compete in both tournaments simultaneously.
The competition has seen various sponsorship-related name changes over the years, such as "Huawei Moterų lyga," yet the core identity of the LMKL persists. A B Division exists below the top tier, though specific promotion rules remain less defined in public records. The league continues to serve as the primary platform for women's basketball development within the nation.
