About

The Balkan International Basketball League, currently known as the Delasport BIBL, operates as a secondary regional competition. It brings together clubs from Kosovo, Montenegro, and other nations for international play alongside their domestic campaigns. The league was established in 2008 to provide a platform for teams seeking competitive exposure and financial support. The structure begins with a double round-robin regular season involving six to eight participants. The top two teams progress directly to the Final Four, while sides ranked third through sixth engage in two-legged playoff series to secure the remaining spots. Participation is secured through invitation or application, and clubs pay fees to join. There is no formal promotion or relegation system within the league. Sigal Prishtina and Levski Sofia are the most successful clubs, each holding three titles. Sigal Prishtina is the current champion, having won the 2023–24 season. The league is officially recognized by FIBA Europe, and its champions typically qualify for the FIBA Europe Cup, which is the third-tier European competition. This tournament includes teams from countries such as Cyprus and Israel, distinguishing it from regional leagues focused solely on former Yugoslav republics. The BIBL notably included teams from Kosovo early in its history, providing a platform for clubs that might otherwise lack international exposure. It occupies a unique position distinct from domestic top tiers, serving as a competitive outlet for clubs that also participate in their national leagues. The league has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship, previously operating as the Eurohold Balkan League and the Sigal Uniqa BIBL. It remains a significant opportunity for clubs to gain experience against diverse opponents outside their immediate borders.
