BC Prievidza

Name it Baník Cígeľ Prievidza for long enough and the nickname outlives the name change: "Bôbari" — Miners — still sticks half a century after the mining company first put its name on the shirts, a label from the Baník era that the club kept even after Baník itself was dropped in 2004. The town's coal pits are gone; the nickname is not.

The club has worn five other names since 1947, when it started out as Sokol Prievidza — Carpathia, Tatran, Lokomotíva, then Baník Cígeľ for four decades from 1964, and HBK before settling on BC Prievidza in 2009. Continuity, in a club that keeps changing its letterhead, has come from elsewhere: from players like Ľuboš Krivošík, on the roster from 1977 to 1991.

The nearest fixture on the calendar needs no introduction in Prievidza or in Handlová, ten miles down the road: the Hornonitrianske derby against MBK Baník Handlová, two towns that dug the same coal seam and now share nothing but the rivalry. Continental competition has been a harder sell — two Alpe Adria Cup semi-finals, in 2015–16 and 2018–19, without a final to show for either.

Home games are played at Športová hala Prievidza, known locally as Nike Arena, in front of a capacity of 3,500 — modest beside the trophies, but the arena has never had to carry the club's identity. That was decided in the 1960s, in the pits the team was named after.
