MBK Handlova

Handlová grew up around coal, and for decades the pit dictated the town's rhythm as much as anything else did. Basketball took root there in 1941, when the club first appeared as ŠK Handlová, and the mining identity stuck hard enough that it eventually became the club's own name: Baníci, the Miners, still worn today with the town's green and black.

The name on the shirt changed more than once — through BK Baník Handlová before the current MBK Handlová was settled on in 2005 — but the results have followed a steadier pattern. Handlová has never lifted the Slovak Extraliga title, finishing runner-up in three straight seasons either side of that name change and taking third place on three further occasions. It is a club that has repeatedly stood one step short rather than broken through, a runner-up finish in the Czech-Slovak Cup in 2025 fitting the same shape decades later.

Kamil Brabenec, counted among the 101 Greats of European Basketball, spent the 1982–83 season in Handlová, a single year that still gets mentioned before longer stints by other names. More recently it has been Marek Jašš, a Slovak international, who has carried the team through its current run, in a club culture that has generally leaned on seasoned domestic and foreign players over academy graduates.

None of it matters as much locally as the fixture with BC Prievidza. The two sides have met more than 145 times, and the Hornonitrianske derby is fought out with a bitterness that regular-season basketball elsewhere in Slovakia rarely produces. Handlová's home games are played in front of just 736 spectators at the Športová hala, a small hall that on derby night still carries the noise of a much bigger one.
