Liga Uruguaya de Básquetbol (LUB) operates as the premier professional basketball competition in Uruguay. Founded in 2003, it replaced the Campeonato Uruguayo Federal de Básquetbol, marking a distinct shift from the amateur structures that dominated the sport for nearly a century. The league is governed by the Federación Uruguaya de Basketball (FUBB), an organization established in 1915 that holds the distinction of being the oldest basketball federation globally and a founding member of FIBA. The competition format is defined by its multi-stage structure designed to determine both promotion and playoff positions. The season begins with a Torneo Clasificatorio, a double round-robin phase where all twelve teams compete. Performance in this initial stage determines the subsequent path for each club. The top six teams advance to the Fase Campeonato to secure seeding for the postseason, while the remaining six enter the Reclasificatorio. This secondary group stage determines which two clubs join the elite six in the playoffs, while the bottom two face relegation to the second division, the Liga Uruguaya de Ascenso (LUA). Playoff series rely on best-of-five matchups for the quarterfinals and semifinals, culminating in a best-of-seven final. Defensor Sporting holds the record for overall success with 20 titles, though five of these came before the LUB era. In the modern period, Club Malvín leads with five championships, while Aguada has claimed four. The current title holders are Club Atlético Peñarol, who secured the 2025–26 crown by defeating Nacional in the previous season. Unlike the broader regional spread of Uruguayan football, the LUB is heavily concentrated in Montevideo. Many participating clubs, including Hebraica Macabi and Aguada, function as community or cultural associations where basketball serves as the primary sport, contrasting with the multi-sport models typical of major football entities. The league remains the highest level of professional play, with the LUB era officially commencing over two decades ago.
