The National Basketball League operates as the premier professional basketball competition in Australia. It sits at the top of the national pyramid, hosting ten teams across a closed franchise system where no promotion or relegation occurs. This structure keeps the league distinct from open systems seen elsewhere. The competition features nine Australian clubs alongside the New Zealand Breakers, making it a binational entity.
The regular season runs during the southern hemisphere summer, typically from September to February. This timing avoids clashes with major domestic winter sports like Australian Rules Football and rugby. Each team plays 33 games in a round-robin format. The playoffs determine the champion through a multi-stage process. The top four teams qualify automatically, while a play-in tournament decides the final two spots. Semi-finals are played as best-of-three series, followed by a best-of-five Grand Final.
Sydney Kings enter the current campaign as reigning champions after securing the title in the previous season. Historically, the Perth Wildcats hold the record for most championships with ten titles. The league enforces strict import player limits to maintain local talent development. Games consist of four 10-minute quarters, adhering to standard international rules.
The competition carries significant commercial weight in the region. It currently operates under a sponsorship deal that includes the name Hungry Jack's in its official title. The league's governance ensures stability through its franchise model, allowing clubs to invest in infrastructure without fear of demotion. This approach aims to grow the sport's profile across the continent and beyond.
