Al-Gharafa took the better of Al-Ahli 76:68 on Tuesday evening in the Qatar Basketball League. The visitors, who sit seventh in the standings, pulled off a result that most would have written off before the opening tip-off. Al-Ahli, third on the table with a comfortable lead over the mid-table pack, were the clear favourites on paper.
And here's the thing — the home side had looked solid in their last outing, grinding out a 66:59 win against Al-Ittihad. But form in basketball is a fickle thing, and by then Al-Gharafa had already shown they could hang with anyone. Their recent results read like a rollercoaster: a 122:119 thriller against Al-Kor, followed by a heavy defeat to Al-Arab. This was the steadier performance.
To be fair, the table tells only part of the story. Al-Ahli's record of eleven wins from sixteen games puts them firmly in the upper echelons. Al-Gharafa's five victories, however, keep them in the lower half — but not so far down that a single result changes everything. Zero draws across both sides means every game carries the same weight.
What matters now is momentum. Al-Ahli's recent run has been mixed — they lost 73:80 to Al-Sadd and were battered 69:96 by Al-Muharraq before that win over Al-Ittihad. Al-Gharafa, meanwhile, have been inconsistent but capable of scoring freely. A hundred-point game against Al-Ahli back in January suggests they can compete on any night.
The result keeps Al-Ahli within touching distance of the top two, while Al-Gharafa move a step closer to wrapping up their season. Seven points separate the two sides in the table, and basketball is a league where anything can happen between now and the final round.
