EuroLeague Overhauls Foul Rules for 2026/27 Season

EuroLeague has redrawn its foul rules for the first-ever EuroLeague Super Cup in 2026 and for the 2026/27 EuroLeague and EuroCup seasons, with the main changes hitting unsportsmanlike and technical fouls.

The unsportsmanlike foul is gone, split into two new categories. A disqualifying foul covers contact that breaks up the flow of play and puts the opponent at an unfair disadvantage without crossing into a flagrant act — stopping a fast break or fouling deliberately to kill the clock at the end of a quarter falls into this group. A flagrant foul is reserved for excessive, reckless, hard or dangerous contact. Both carry the same penalties the old unsportsmanlike foul did, but only the flagrant foul counts towards an ejection.

Technical fouls are now split the same way. A category-1 technical counts towards disqualification and can be called for disrespectful conduct, taunting an opponent, deliberately blocking his line of sight or simulation. A category-2 technical does not count towards disqualification and applies to delaying the restart of play, hanging on the rim after a dunk or interfering with the ball during a final free throw. A player is ejected after two category-1 technicals, two flagrant fouls, or one of each.

The league also clarified how the start of a shooting motion is defined and how contact during a shot is read, and confirmed that a number of rule adaptations introduced earlier will stay in place for the new season.
