About the player

Franco Agustín Romero was flagged in some early listings as a goalkeeper, but every reliable source agrees on his real role. Born in La Plata, he came up through the Estudiantes academy and made his senior debut there in November 2020, though first-team chances stayed scarce — only four appearances across three years pushed him out on loan, first to Agropecuario in the Primera Nacional, then to Independiente Rivadavia.

That second loan changed his career. Romero became a starter and captain at Independiente Rivadavia, playing 34 league matches as the club won the Primera Nacional and earned promotion to the Argentine top flight. Defensa y Justicia signed him as a free agent in early 2024, then immediately sent him back to Independiente Rivadavia for the rest of the season, where he added 20 league appearances and two goals.

In January 2025, Toluca paid a reported $1.5 million for his signature and tied him to a three-year contract. The move paid off quickly: Romero started 28 of his 31 matches in his first season, averaging almost 84 minutes a game, and became a regular in a Toluca side that won the Clausura and Apertura titles to complete the Bicampeonato. He scored in the 3-2 win over LA Galaxy in the Campeones Cup, started as Toluca beat Monterrey 2-0 in the Leagues Cup final, and featured again as the club defeated Tigres UANL to lift the Concacaf Copa de Campeones.
