About

Liga MX is the top tier of the Mexican football pyramid. Founded in 1943 by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) as the Liga Mayor, the competition transitioned from the amateur Campeonato de Primera Fuerza. In 2026, the league became an independent company separate from the FMF. The season runs in two short tournaments: the Apertura, from July to December, and the Clausura, from January to May. Each stage crowns a separate champion. All 18 clubs play a single round-robin of 17 matches. The top eight teams advance to the Liguilla, a playoff stage played over two legs with aggregate scoring determining the winner. Mexico has no promotion or relegation. This structure was introduced in April 2020 after the folding of the second division, Ascenso MX. The suspension was extended until the 2026–2027 season following a verdict by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in September 2025. Club América is the most successful club with 16 titles. Toluca won the most recent Apertura 2025 tournament, defeating Tigres UANL on penalties. The league allocates six to seven spots in the CONCACAF Champions Cup based on the aggregate table, known as the *Tabla General*, which combines results from both tournaments. Liga MX clubs also participate in the Leagues Cup, a joint tournament with the major league of the United States. The league rebranded from Primera División in 2012 and has been sponsored by BBVA since 2013.
