Liga MX Femenil is the premier professional women's football competition in Mexico, established by the Mexican Football Federation and the owners of Liga MX men's clubs. The league operates as a closed franchise system, meaning all participating teams are direct affiliates of established men's clubs, and there is no mechanism for promotion or relegation. This structure ensures that every team benefits from the financial stability and infrastructure of its parent organization.

The season is divided into two independent tournaments: the Apertura, which runs from July to December, and the Clausura, held from January to May. For the 2026 season, the format has shifted to two groups of nine teams, with each team playing 14 matches per tournament. Despite this regional grouping, the top eight teams from each group still advance to the knockout playoffs known as the Liguilla. This change follows previous iterations where all 18 teams competed in a single table.

Club América stands as the current champion after winning the Clausura 2026 final against Monterrey. Tigres UANL holds the distinction of being the most successful club in the competition's history, having secured seven titles. The league is officially sponsored by BBVA and is widely known as Liga BBVA Femenil. Fans have shown significant support, with a record attendance of 58,156 witnesses recorded during the Clausura 2023 final at Estadio Azteca. The competition replaced the earlier Liga Mexicana de Fútbol Femenil, bringing institutional support and allowing for roster flexibility regarding age limits and foreign players.
