About
The Liga Premier Serie A operates as the third tier of the Mexican football pyramid, positioned below the Liga de Expansión MX and above the fourth-tier Serie B. Administered by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF), the competition currently runs under the designation Premier A for the 2026 season, following a structural rebranding that began in 2017. Historically established in 1950 as the Segunda División de México, the league was relegated to third status in 1994 when the Primera División "A" was created. The structure for the 2025–2026 campaign involves 42 clubs split into three geographic groups of 14 teams. Play follows a long-format schedule featuring Apertura and Clausura tournaments, with regular-season matches played home and away within each group. Qualification for the knockout playoffs, known as the Liguilla, is determined by the top eight teams in the overall or group standings. While promotion to the second tier is suspended for the current season, the traditional pathway involves a two-legged playoff between the Apertura and Clausura champions against a Liga de Expansión side. Administrative requirements are strict, mandating stadium capacities between 8,000 and 12,000 seats alongside professional facilities. Relegation to the fourth tier applies to the lowest-placed team in the annual aggregate table. Zacatepec stands as the most successful club in the league's history, having secured the title five times during the mid-twentieth century. The competition serves as the official route for consolidated non-reserve teams, remaining distinct from private entities such as the defunct Liga de Balompié Mexicano.
