Liga de Expansión MX (Mexico) 2026/27

Liga de Expansión MX operates as the second tier of professional football in Mexico. Founded in 2020 by the Mexican Football Federation and Liga MX owners, the league replaced the defunct Ascenso MX to address financial instability within the lower divisions. The competition begins each year with the Apertura tournament in July, followed by the Clausura season from January through May. Sixteen clubs participate in a single-table round-robin format, where the top eight sides progress to the Liguilla, a two-legged knockout playoff. The victors of the two annual tournaments meet in the Campeón de Campeones super cup.

Unlike traditional open systems, the league functions as a closed entity with no sporting promotion or relegation. The sole pathway for a second-division club to reach the top flight involves purchasing a franchise license from an existing Liga MX team. In 2026, Atlante FC acquired the Mazatlán FC rights for approximately $65 million USD to return to the first division. The league also employs a hybrid ownership model. Some clubs operate as independent franchises, while others serve as reserve teams or affiliates for top-flight clubs, providing a developmental platform for young players.

Atlante F.C. stands as the most successful club in the competition's history, having secured three titles: the Apertura 2021, Apertura 2022, and Clausura 2024. Tepatitlán F.C. holds the current championship, having won the Clausura 2026 title. The inaugural edition saw Tampico Madero defeat Atlante 3–2 on aggregate. The league is officially sponsored by BBVA, under the name Liga BBVA Expansión MX.
