Estadio Morelos sits below the wooded slopes on the edge of Morelia, built to seat somewhere between 34,795 and 45,000 depending on which count you trust.
It started out in 1924 as Oro — Gold — and that word explains more about the club than any of the names that came after. Red came in for the flag of the city and, further back, of Spain. Ricardo Salinas Pliego's Grupo Salinas bought the team in 1999 and renamed it Monarcas, after the coat of arms of Morelia.
Under that name it won the one league title that anchors its history, the Invierno 2000, and added a Copa MX, a Supercopa and a SuperLiga in the years after.
Grupo Salinas walked away in 2020, announcing the franchise would relocate to Mazatlán.
