Monarcas edge past Cruz Azul in Liga de Expansión clash
Monarcas secured a 2:1 victory over Cruz Azul in the fourth round of the Liga de Expansión MX Apertura on Friday night. The away side took the lead after an own goal in the second half, having already gone ahead through a D. De Buen strike. By then the hosts were searching for an equaliser that never materialised, and the result leaves Monarcas second in the table while Cruz Azul slip further down.
M. Nambo opened the scoring early, finding the net in the fifth minute. The home side controlled possession but struggled to convert pressure, and D. Aguilar collected a yellow card in the fortieth minute as things tightened. Monarcas brought on three players at the break — A. A. Saavedra Nevarez, E. Sanchez and K. Palacios — and the change showed immediately when De Buen levelled in the fifty-eighth.
What followed was a tense period for the hosts. M. Nambo, who had scored the opener, was substituted in the seventy-second minute, and Cruz Azul were hit again when R. Lopez Aburto turned the ball into his own net in the eighty-first. The home side pushed for a comeback, but Monarcas closed the game out with three more changes in the eighty-second before the final whistle.
Statistics tell a familiar story. Cruz Azul dominated possession at 57 per cent and registered 80 attacks, yet created zero big chances while Monarcas produced five. The home side managed only one shot on target from six attempts, whereas the visitors hit the target five times from twelve shots. And here's the thing — much of the attacking work went nowhere, with the visitors converting their efficiency into results.
The standings now reflect a growing gap. Monarcas sit second with fifteen points from seven games, their five wins carrying them clear of the mid-table pack. Cruz Azul remain in fourteenth with just six points, their recent run of a loss and two draws underscoring the struggle. The visitors extend their positive momentum, while the home side's clean-sheet ambitions came to an end after a promising start.
