Durango

Mario "Pichojos" Pérez had already played for Mexico at the 1970 World Cup by the time he took charge in Durango. The team won the Segunda División twice in a row, the Invierno 1998 and the Verano 1999.

The club existed at all because the state government had bought the franchise of the disbanded Serpientes de Cancún in January 1997. Durango had gone 8 years without professional football. The new side started life as Camineros de Durango.

What followed reads as a long argument with money. In May 2011 the club walked away from the Liga de Ascenso and survived as a reserve side in the Liga de Nuevos Talentos, winning the Clausura there in 2013. The Apertura 2021 title in Serie A opened the promotion play-off; on 15 May 2022 the team took the Serie A championship, and on 14 June it was handed a place in the Liga de Expansión MX.

That place lasted a year.
