Leones Negros UDG

Two derbies pull at Leones Negros UdeG from different directions. One is the Clásico Universitario against Estudiantes Tecos. The other is the wider Clásico Tapatío, where Chivas and Atlas make the city's football weather.

The club came out of the University of Guadalajara in 1970, and its black, red and yellow vertical stripes are the university's colours worn on a football shirt.

The 1978 CONCACAF Champions Cup remains the one trophy that travelled furthest. Belarmino de Almeida Júnior — Nené — and Carlos de Jesus Eusébio scored the goals that mattered in the final, though the title itself was shared with Comunicaciones of Guatemala and Defence Force of Trinidad after administrative disputes were never resolved.

Domestically the near-misses outnumber the medals: runners-up in the Primera División in 1975/76, again the following season, and once more in 1989/90. The Copa México of 1990/91 broke that pattern, a 1–0 win over América in the final after three defeats in earlier finals.

Jorge Dávalos captained the side for more than 12 years and later returned to coach it, which makes him the closest thing the club has to a through-line across those decades.

The recent years have been spent below the top division. Leones Negros won the Ascenso MX Apertura in 2013, then the Liga de Expansión MX Clausura in 2025, beating Tampico Madero on penalties after a goalless final. Home matches are at the Estadio Jalisco, a ground built for far larger crowds than the Expansión division brings.
