«Iron Colts»
The name took shape gradually rather than at a single founding moment. A group of workers from the Excelsior shoe factory, led by Trinidad Martín, formed a team that went by Sinaloa, then Lusitania, then U-53, then Atlántico, before the label settled into Atlante.
Three league titles mark the span of that history: 1946-47, 1992-93, and Apertura 2007. The middle one belongs to a specific pairing. Juan Carreño, from the same amateur-into-professional stretch of the 1920s and 30s, went on to score Mexico's first goal at an Olympic Games and at a World Cup. Decades later, Hugo Sánchez and Jorge Campos turned out for the club in the mid-1990s.
Continental success came twice over, in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup of 1983 and again in 2008-09, with a run to the CONCACAF Champions League final the following year.
