Atletico San Luis

Two league titles inside eight months got Atlético San Luis into Liga MX without a play-off: Apertura 2018, and then Clausura 2019, won 2-1 on aggregate after extra time against the same opponent. Winning both halves of a single Ascenso MX season made the club champion of the whole division outright — automatic promotion, no post-season required.

The club exists because Jacobo Payán, who owned the Alfonso Lastras Ramírez stadium, bought Veracruz's second-division side and moved it to San Luis Potosí in 2013, filling the gap left when the city's own club had relocated to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and become Chiapas. For a season, 2016/17, the city had no team in the top two flights at all, after a planned deal to bring that old club back fell through. The name settled on afterwards fused two defunct local sides, Atlético Potosino and San Luis F.C.

In March 2017, Atlético Madrid bought half the club, and the following month — 24 April 2017 — San Luis resumed operations under the new ownership with a rebuilt squad; the club marks that date alongside its 2013 founding. The red, white and blue kit dates from the same change of hands, replacing the blue and gold the city's clubs had worn before. Supporters still use three different nicknames depending on which era they mean: Los Atléticos for the Spanish partnership, Los Tuneros for the cactus fruit that symbolises the state, Los Auriazules for the blue-and-gold years now retired along with the old badge.

Home games are played at the Alfonso Lastras Ramírez. In Liga MX itself, the club has yet to go further than a semi-final, reached in Apertura 2023 and lost to América.
