Cancún beat Atlante 3-0 at home, then went to Mexico City and won 3-0 again — 6-0 on aggregate against the club that had played in this same city until three years earlier, when it packed up and returned to the capital.

In June 2020 the franchise of Cafetaleros de Chiapas was moved out of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, renamed, and dropped into Quintana Roo.

Ownership changed hands in January 2022, when an investment group led by Jeff Luhnow bought in. Regulatory questions kept José Luis Orontes in the president's chair until the end of the 2021-22 season, and the deal was not formally approved by the other Liga de Expansión MX clubs until 1 June 2022.
