Ulises Jaimes scored the goal that carried Club Atlético La Paz past Alebrijes de Oaxaca in the Play-In round of the Clausura 2024. Venados de Mérida ended the run there, but the sequence was the second in two seasons: the Apertura 2023 had already taken the side into the Liguilla for the first time, seventh in the table.

The club exists because a franchise moved. In April 2022 the ownership group GLS Promotora del Deporte, headed by the tequila entrepreneur Arturo Lomelí, bought the Liga de Expansión MX place held by Tampico Madero and shifted it across the country to La Paz. Baja California Sur had never had a professional side in the second tier of Mexican football; it does now, and it has only one, so there is no derby to speak of and no local rival to measure anything against.

Home is the Estadio Guaycura, 5,490 seats. The colours are black and yellow, which is where Los Aurinegros comes from; supporters also use La Palomilla.

One thing the club declines to take with it: the franchise it replaced won the inaugural Liga de Expansión MX title in 2020. La Paz treats itself as a new entity and leaves that trophy where it was earned.

The dugout has changed hands twice in recent seasons. Raúl Rico led the side into February 2025; Hugo Norberto Castillo took over in May. Samuel Hernández is president. Michelle Benítez remains the leading scorer, Jonathan Estrada the captain.

The immediate task is the one the two Liguilla runs set: to make the postseason a habit rather than a pair of good months.
