About

The Primera Premier operates as the third tier of Mexican football, sitting above the regionalised Liga Premier A and Liga Premier B. The competition sits under the governance of the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol (FMF), which oversees its structure and rules. It traces its roots back to 1950 when it launched as the Segunda División de México. That status lasted until 1994, when the creation of the Primera División 'A' pushed it down a level. The league underwent a significant rebrand in 2017, becoming the Liga Premier with a split into two series. A major overhaul in 2026 reshaped the landscape again, creating the current three-branch system where the Primera Premier serves as the top division within the third tier.

The competition features 18 clubs split into two groups, labelled Group I and Group II. Teams play a regular season phase before the top four from each group enter a knockout playoff known as the Liguilla. The victor of this final stage claims the Liga Premier title. Success brings a shot at promotion to the second tier, the Liga de Expansión MX, though this is conditional. Clubs must secure the FMF's "Licencia Plus," a credential demanding strict compliance across juridical, administrative, financial, sporting, and infrastructure areas. Conversely, the club finishing bottom of the regular season drops into Liga Premier A.

Historically, Zacatepec F.C. and Tampico Madero share the record for most titles with five each. In the most recent campaign, 2025–2026, Deportiva Venados emerged as the reigning champion. The league maintains a direct promotion pathway based on merit, distinct from the second tier's franchise model. Fans can follow updates via the official website, ligapremier.mx.
