Zacatepec 1948

Estadio Mariano Matamoros became home to Zacatepec only in late 2024. Atlante's move into the city of Zacatepec and its refusal to share the old Estadio Agustín "Coruco" Díaz pushed the club out of the ground it had used for decades. The club returned as Zacatepec F.C., taking back the name workers at the Emiliano Zapata sugar mill gave it in 1948.

White and green stand for sugar and cane, and the nickname Los Cañeros has never needed updating no matter how many times the ownership around it changed hands.

The trophy case belongs to another era. Zacatepec won the Primera División in 1954-55 and again in 1957-58, added two Copa México titles either side of a Campeón de Campeones in 1956, and built much of that run around Raúl Cárdenas, who wore the shirt from 1954 to 1965. Relegation in 1961 started a pattern that repeated in 1977 and 1985, and the club has not been back in Mexico's top flight since. What followed instead were five Segunda División titles, spread across four decades, each one a promotion earned rather than a status defended.

Pablo Larios, born in Zacatepec and later a goalkeeper at the 1986 World Cup, is the other name the town still brings up before others who passed through.

Now competing in the Liga Premier Serie A, the club's fiercest fixture is local rather than historic: matches against Sporting Canamy are billed as the Clásico Morelense, a rivalry that matters more to Morelos than to the record books Zacatepec once filled.
