Pioneros de Cancún

Enrique Vela wore the shirt at Pioneros before he took over from the touchline, part of a family the club has been able to call its own since his nephew Christo, brother of Carlos Vela, came through the youth side.

The municipal government of Benito Juárez created Pioneros in 1984, and the mayor of the day, Joaquín González Castro, chose the name to honour the people who had founded Cancún itself. The early years took the club from the Tercera División into the Segunda, and in 1987, under the coach Tihomir "Tiko" Jelisavčić, they reached the semifinals for promotion to the First Division and fell short. Relegation to Segunda División B followed at the end of the decade, and by 1995 the club had merged with a taxi drivers' union to survive as Pioneros Taxistas, before the franchise changed hands in 1997.

It took until the 2013–14 season for the club to reach back for that early promise. Pioneros won the Apertura 2013 in the Liga de Nuevos Talentos, then beat Selva Cañera 2-1 on aggregate in the Campeón de Campeones final to go up to what is now the Liga Premier Serie A. Santiago Ormeño passed through the squad in 2017, three years before Puebla and the Peru national team; Daniel Arreola, who had played in Liga MX for Atlante, Pachuca, Atlas and Puebla, later returned as vice president rather than as a player.

Inter Playa del Carmen remains the club's rival in what is known locally as the Clásico Quintanarroense. Pioneros play at the Estadio Cancún 86, a ground built for 6,390 that has outlasted every version of the club that has called it home.
