Tapachula

The one major title in Tapachula football came in 2018, and it did not come easily. Cafetaleros de Tapachula beat Leones Negros UdeG over two legs in the semi-finals, then beat Alebrijes de Oaxaca, winning 5–3 on aggregate to be crowned champions of the Ascenso MX for 2017–18. Leonardo Ramos, the Argentine striker, top-scored through the playoffs with six goals, and Luis Hernández found the net in the final itself. The Mexican Football Federation withheld promotion to Liga MX on stadium and financial grounds and paid the club 120 million pesos in compensation instead.

That team never played in the top flight. In 2019 it relocated to Tuxtla Gutiérrez and became Cafetaleros de Chiapas, later Jaguares F.C., leaving Tapachula without a senior club and its "Cafetaleros" name behind. Tapachula Soconusco F.C. was formed on 26 October 2023 to fill that gap, entering the Liga Premier Serie A for the 2024–25 season. Meetings between the two now carry the weight of a succession dispute as much as a derby: Jaguares holds the pedigree, but Tapachula Soconusco plays in the city and the stadium, the Estadio Olímpico de Tapachula, where that pedigree was built.

The new club has already found some early success, winning the 2024 Liga Sureste MX title in its amateur circuit. It plays in white and sky blue, a change from the green and white once worn by Cafetaleros. What it has not done is inherit a nickname: "Los Cafetaleros" belongs, by most accounts, to the club that left for Tuxtla, and nothing has yet settled in its place. A first Liga Premier campaign under way, Tapachula Soconusco still has no honour of its own at that level, and no promotion to chase what its predecessor was denied.
