Irapuato sits in the Bajío, in Guanajuato, and the club took its popular name straight from the fields around it. Los Freseros trace back to February 15, 1911, when Pedro Garnu and Diego Mosqueda set up Club Mutualista Irapuatense; the professional side that carries the city's name into Mexican football took shape decades later, in 1948, when local clubs merged to enter the Segunda División.

What followed was less a straight line than a series of restarts. The club changed its name and its legal shape repeatedly — Real Irapuato, Club Irapuato Por Siempre, Club Atlético Irapuato among them — before being refounded in March 2022. Each version kept returning to the same two colours, red and navy blue, and the same ground, the Estadio Sergio León Chávez, known locally as El Mundialista.

The trophy cabinet reflects that up-and-down path: four Segunda División titles and four Ascenso MX crowns, the most recent promotion coming in the 2025–26 season, decades after the first, in 1999–2000. Jaime Belmonte remains the reference point in the club's scoring history, with 125 goals and a place in Mexico's 1958 World Cup squad, a link between Irapuato's provincial reputation and the wider game.

On the pitch, the fixture that still carries weight is the Clásico del Bajío against León, a rivalry rooted in geography as much as results. It is in that same region, chasing the same clubs, that the story keeps circling back to where it started — a mutualist football club formed by two men in a strawberry town in 1911.
