About the player
Lukas Ahlefeld Engel made his name at Kastrup Boldklub. The habit travelled with him to Fremad Amager, where he became the club's top scorer in the 2018/19 season with ten goals and 89 appearances there.
His move into senior Danish football continued at Vejle Boldklub and then Silkeborg IF, where he helped the club to a bronze medal in the Superliga. He went on to make 44 appearances for Middlesbrough, though by 2025 he was out on loan in Major League Soccer with FC Cincinnati, where he made 33 appearances without adding to his goal tally.
Cincinnati held a team option to sign him permanently but did not take it up, and Engel returned to Middlesbrough in December 2025. In January 2026 he moved to Real Salt Lake for a fee in the region of £740,000–£750,000, roughly $1 million. He has since made 12 appearances for his new club. Engel has represented Denmark at youth level but has not yet been capped by the senior national side.
